Getting everyone to the wedding, and home after the party

On your wedding day you shouldn't be counting heads or wondering who has had a drink. A car for the two of you and a minibus or coach for your guests takes care of both.

For the two of you and the bridal party

A wedding car with a driver is licensed by the NTA as a limousine or hackney. It is booked ahead, and the fare is settled before the day. An executive saloon takes the couple; a people carrier can bring the bridesmaids along together.

Belts have to be worn wherever they're fitted, even over a wedding dress. Build in a moment at each stop so nobody has to rush with a train or a veil.

Shuttles for your guests

Taxis, hackneys and limousines stop at 8 passengers. Past that, guests travel by bus or coach, which needs an operator licence behind it. A 16 to 19 seat minibus is lovely for a smaller wedding or a hotel shuttle. For thirty or so, a midi coach handles the narrow avenue to a country-house venue better than a 12 m coach.

Popular bases include the country-house hotels around Kilkenny, Enniskerry and Powerscourt near Bray, and Ferrycarrig outside Wexford. Send the church, reception and hotel addresses with the times you'd like to leave each one.

Rules worth knowing

  • Taxis, hackneys and limousines carry up to 8 passengers; larger groups need a bus or coach under an operator licence

Allow for photographs

The gap between the ceremony and the reception is the one that stretches. Photos outside the church, a stop at a favourite view and guests chatting at the door all add up, so book the guest shuttle for when people will actually be ready.

The late run and the morning after

After the last run from the reception, the driver must rest: at least 11 hours as a rule, cut to 9 hours no more than three times between weekly rests. So a 01:00 finish shapes the next morning. Planning an airport run for guests the following day? Say so when you book, and a second driver can be lined up.

Questions

How many guests fit in a wedding minibus?

Usually 16 to 19. For around thirty, a midi coach keeps everyone in one vehicle.

Can the same driver take guests to the airport next morning?

Not always. Drivers need a long break between shifts, so a late finish can rule out an early start. Ask when you book.

Is there room for a wheelchair user among the guests?

Let the operator know early. A wheelchair-accessible minibus or hackney can be arranged, and early notice leaves time to find the right one.

Plan your wedding transport

Share the date, every address and how many guests travel on each leg. A licensed partner operator will quote cars and minibuses with drivers, and you choose.
