Getting Around Limerick and Shannon by Minibus

Limerick sits between Shannon Airport and some of the Mid-West's most visited places, which makes it an easy first or last night on an Irish trip. We book a minibus and driver from a licensed local operator so your group travels on its own timetable.

Landing at Shannon

Shannon Airport is about 25 minutes from the city along the N18. Minibus and coach operators aren't allowed to park outside the terminal, so your driver waits in the airport's coach parks. Coach Park 2, at departures, is the one used by on-hire minibuses.

Flying home to the United States? You'll clear US immigration and customs at Shannon before you board, so build that into the time you leave the hotel.

Bunratty and Adare

Bunratty Castle and Folk Park is about 20 minutes from Limerick and around 10 from the airport, just off the N18, with free parking for visitors. It's a gentle first stop after a long flight.

Adare, about 25 minutes south-west, is all thatched cottages and the grounds of Adare Manor. It makes a pretty base for a wedding or golf weekend, with the city close enough for an evening out.

In the city

King John's Castle stands on King's Island, and St Mary's Cathedral is the oldest building in Limerick still in daily use. Art lovers head for the Hunt Museum in the Custom House; food lovers for the covered Milk Market, busiest with stalls at the weekend.

Thomond Park holds about 25,600 for Munster Rugby, and Limerick GAA play at the Gaelic Grounds on the Ennis Road. On a big match day, agree a pick-up spot away from the ground before kick-off.

Longer days out

Allow about an hour for the Rock of Cashel, an hour and a quarter for the Cliffs of Moher, and roughly an hour and three quarters for Killarney. The N18 Limerick Tunnel under the Shannon is tolled, and the M7 from Dublin passes the Portlaoise-Castletown toll point, so check your quote lists any tolls on your route.
